Saturdays Were Made For Cartoons!

As I throw in a load of laundry and sweep the kitchen floor, my mind races back to the days when I would roll out of the rack and head down to the living room to turn on the tv and sit for what seemed like hours upon hours watching cartoons on Saturday mornings.  (Sometimes we would have to wait on the television to warm up!)  I did have chores to do back then.  I don't remember my brother having to do any chores now that I sit and think about it (I'm going to ask my mother about this today), but my sister and I had a list of chores to do before lunch...but anyone can dust and watch cartoons, vacuum and watch cartoons, fold laundry and watch cartoons, and unload the dishwasher and crane your neck from the kitchen and watch cartoons!  Right?!  Making our beds was done the minute we got up so we didn't have to miss any little bit of a cartoon to run back up the stairs to make our beds.  We never understood why a person had to make their bed anyway.  We thought it was dumb because you just get right back in it and mess it all up again that night, right?!  If you're wondering...I only make my bed now when I change my sheets!!  Soooo, once a week, my bed gets made and it makes me very happy!
Are you wondering what some of the cartoons were that I watched back then and might still be on today?  Well, here are several that I used to watch OR fought with my sister over when she wanted to flip the channel to watch "her show" and I'd be forced to watch:
1.  Tom and Jerry
2.  Scooby Doo
3.  Sylvester and Tweety
4.  Tarzan
5.  Shazam and Isis (the Superhero, not the Terrorist!)
6.  Ark II
7.  Clue Club
8.  Woody Woodpecker
9.  Pink Panther
10. McDuff the Talking Dog
11. Monster Squad
12. Land of the Lost
13. Bugs Bunny and Roadrunner
14. Planet of the Apes
15. Captain Caveman
16. The Grape Ape
17. Hong Kong Phooey
18. Superfriends
19. Valley of the Dinosaurs
20.  The Jetsons

When the noon hour rolled around it was time for American Bandstand.  I disliked, very much, to have to sit and watch American Bandstand, but it was my sister's favorite show.  My mom usually fixed our lunch while we watched American Bandstand.  I just can't quit saying American Bandstand...maybe I've missed it so much because it brings back such fond memories!  American Bandstand.  Also, in case you were wondering why I didn't watch television in another room...back then, we only had one television in the entire house.  Back to American Bandstand...when American Bandstand came on and I was forced to sit and watch it with my sister, I'd crawl up into the chair from where I had been watching cartoons on the floor pillows.   I would break out my book that I happened to be reading from the school or public library.  More times than not, at this period in my life, it was a book from The Boxcar Children series.  Oh how I loved The Boxcar Children!  I do believe I read them all, sitting there in the living room chair while American Bandstand played on in the background as I tried like crazy to tune out my sister's singing and dancing.  Ugh!  Gross!  As an adult and I piddle around the house on Saturday mornings doing responsible adulting things, I would much rather be curled up in the chair reading my book with American Bandstand playing in the background!

  1. Scooby Doo was my favorite cartoon! I rocked an entire Scooby outfit (pants, vest, jacket, and hat) until 4th grade.

  3. I have always loved Tom and Jerry, and while my sisters may have watched American Bandstand, I enjoyed a Bible cartoon series on Saturday mornings along with He Man and She ra. My favorite was when it switched to people though like Saved by the Bell.
